Our fish are raised in recirculating aquaculture systems or simply “RAS,” meaning that we reuse the water that the fish live in through the use of pumps, solids filtration and bio-filtration to provide our fish with the cleanest possible water, while saving 99.99% of it so we can do it all over again. I know, I know, what about that 0.01%? Good question! So what if I told you that we took that great, nutrient rich water and sent it to a greenhouse where we grew multiple varieties of leafy greens on water, and then sent it back to the fish and reused it again? Seems crazy, but it’s actually serious business!
We chose RAS as our preferred method for exactly this reason, as well as a few more. Not only can we recycle all that water, but because we do, we actually have much greater control over how we raise the fish. Our ability to control this water and the contents within it makes it easier to adjust temperature, pH and toxic compounds like CO2 and ammonia that build up from the fish exercising and eating. If you take this great technology and place it indoors, like we have, we can create an ecosystem that the fish will enjoy and thrive in. We also pride ourselves with the fact that we use none of the bad stuff you might associate with farmed fish. We don’t use antibiotics, we don’t use hormones. You’ll never find pesticides, heavy metals or PCB’s in our water or fish. This ultimately gets us a larger, healthier fish in a much quicker timeframe as opposed to other culture methods.
We don’t want to stop there either. We’ve looked into the feed that we will provide our fish, making sure that our fish will not only like it and grow well from it, but that it is also created in an environmentally sustainable manner. We don’t use ingredients that have been directly fished out of the ocean for the purpose of feed. Instead, we use secondary products from already sustainable fisheries that would otherwise be discarded as waste. This helps reduce the dependence on wild fisheries, and keeps fish in our beautiful oceans.
We want our product to be local. We want the people in the neighborhoods around us to have a connection our company, and be able to buy our products at the stores where they already shop. We don’t want to create a business that alienates the people we interact with on a daily basis. By locating a business in the heart of our market to we create an inherently fresher product. This provides you with something that you can’t find at any Wisconsin seafood counter…fresh, never frozen, Atlantic salmon.
The best part? Our fish compare well with the best wild-caught salmon in the world with high Omega-3’s, with a buttery taste and flaky texture.
