From First Harvest to Next Horizon: Celebrating 8 Years of U.S.-Raised Atlantic Salmon

This summer marks a meaningful milestone for Superior Fresh—one that brings our journey full circle while opening the door to an exciting new chapter.

Eight years ago, we reached a historic moment when our Atlantic salmon first made its way onto store shelves. In July 2018, Festival Foods became the first retailer in the nation to carry Atlantic salmon raised right here in the United States, grown at our aquaponics facility in Wisconsin. That moment wasn’t just a product launch—it was proof that premium, responsibly raised salmon could be produced domestically, close to the communities we serve. [onfocus.news]

Today, we’re proud to celebrate that anniversary in a powerful way: with the first harvest from our newest farm in Albany, Indiana.

A Milestone Built on Innovation

When Superior Fresh introduced U.S.-raised Atlantic salmon to the market, it represented a shift in how seafood could be produced and distributed. Our indoor, land-based system allowed us to raise salmon in a fully controlled environment—free from antibiotics, pesticides, and the uncertainties of ocean farming. [onfocus.news]

This approach also enabled us to deliver a product that met the highest standards of sustainability and quality, earning a “Best Choice” rating from Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. [onfocus.news]

But perhaps most importantly, it allowed us to bring seafood production closer to home—reducing travel time, improving freshness, and creating a reliable domestic supply.

Festival Foods’ early partnership played a critical role in that success. By introducing our salmon to customers across Wisconsin, they helped demonstrate that there was real demand for locally raised, clean seafood.

Eight Years Later: Expanding the Vision

Fast forward to 2026, and that early momentum has grown into something much larger.

This July, Superior Fresh will harvest the first fish from our new Indiana facility—timed deliberately with the anniversary of our original launch into retail. That connection is more than symbolic. It reflects how far we’ve come in building a new model for seafood production in the United States. [intrafish.com]

With this expansion, we anticipate significantly increasing our production capacity, helping us serve both existing partners and new customers across retail and foodservice. [intrafish.com]

Meeting a Growing Demand

Over the past eight years, consumer preferences have continued to evolve. More than ever, people want to know where their food comes from and how it’s produced. They’re looking for options that are fresh, nutritious, and raised with care for both people and the environment.

That shift has driven a growing demand for domestically raised seafood—something we’ve seen firsthand through our partnerships and customer feedback. [intrafish.com]

Our expansion into Indiana is a direct response to that demand. By increasing production closer to key markets, we can also reduce the environmental impact associated with transporting seafood long distances, further strengthening our commitment to sustainability.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate eight years since our salmon first reached store shelves, we’re reminded of the vision that started it all: proving that world-class Atlantic salmon could be raised right here in the United States.

Today, that vision is no longer a concept—it’s a growing reality.

From Wisconsin to Indiana, we are continuing to build a domestic seafood network that prioritizes quality, sustainability, and transparency. And as we harvest our first fish from our new facility, we do so with gratitude for the partnerships, customers, and team members who have been part of this journey from the beginning.

The past eight years have laid the foundation. The next chapter is just getting started.
