DIY Butterfly Bug Box

Summer is in flight and we’re sure you’ve seen some beautiful monarchs fluttering in the fields. Our farm’s restored land is home to many of these beautiful creatures. We find they are the perfect critter for inspiring a heart for conservation in your kiddo starting at a young age.

Did you know your Superior Fresh organic salad container can be repurposed into a bug box? If you follow these simple instructions, you can have a safe place to capture some critters and watch them grow!

Materials

  • One (1) 4.5 oz empty Superior Fresh clamshell

  • Fine mesh screen or netting

  • Hot glue gun

  • Box cutter

  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Clean and dry clamshell.

  2. Remove lid and cut out the center surrounding the label with a box cutter. Leave 1/2 inch from rim of the package so that top can still lock into base container.

  3. Cut fine mesh material to 8.25in x 8.75in with a box cutter.

  4. Hot glue mesh rectangle to the TOP of the clamshell lid. Do not use excess glue as it may melt edge and prevent the seal.

  5. Allow to cool. Trim excess mesh and glue with scissors.

  6. Clip lid into place on base like you normally would, the container should be sealed but have one side of mesh for ample fresh air!

  7. Have fun bug hunting!
