The Secret to Making a Good Salad

On the journey towards better health, our wish for you is to help you discover great-tasting, satisfying meals. This is not about deprivation or dieting, but rather aimed at helping you to step outside of your comfort zone to find new ways to fuel your body and mind with nourishing food that has a multitude of benefits - better sleep, glowing skin, shiny hair, mental clarity, better performance, increased energy and so much more!

Step 1: Transform any Meal into a Salad

You can transform any meal into a salad. It’s easy.

  • Tacos for dinner? Make it into a taco salad instead. You don’t have to give up the crunch, however, use tortilla chips as a garnish.

  • Did you want to make it a pasta night? No problem. There are loads of ways to add veggies to pasta and we’re not just talking about using tomato sauce. Add broccoli and spinach, onions, garlic, beans - the possibilities are endless.

Step 2: Get Salad Inspiration

If you’re tired of boring salads, there’s tons of places to find inspiration from searching online, to looking at restaurant salad trends to perusing the salad kits in your local supermarket for ideas.

  • Salad (fast food) chain restaurants are popping up all over the country and have invested a lot into studying consumer preferences and creating salad menus that tempt your tastebuds. In fact, SweetGreen, one of the leaders, opened its doors in Minneapolis this past summer and trust us, you can re-create their guacamole green goddess salad in your own kitchen easily!

  • Another leading salad chain, Chopt, has admittedly inspired us to add roasted vegetables and ancient grains to our salads now. Visit their menus online or take a field trip to inspire your taste buds and get new salad ideas.

And if all else fails, there is always Pinterest to find amazingly delicious salad recipes and inspiration.

Step 3: Make Homemade Salad Dressing

Salad dressings don’t have to be rocket science; we recently discovered that every vinaigrette salad dressing uses the same simple recipe - 3 parts of oil to 1 part vinegar. For example, a basic vinaigrette uses 3 tablespoons of EVOO + 1 tablespoon of vinegar (balsamic, white wine or apple cider vinegar). You can adjust the quantity based on how much you need or personal preferences.

On a recent quest to recreate a homemade Asian salad dressing, we realized that making our own homemade salad dressing was well worth the effort! In fact, it’s hardly any effort at all once you have the ingredients stocked at home.

After reading this article, “Are Salads Actually Good for You,” it reinforced our position that making your own salad dressing is a better nutritional bargain by a long shot than most shelf-stable, store-bought salad dressings.

Step 4: Use High-Quality Fresh Ingredients

Any great chef or foodie will agree that great tasting food starts with sourcing high quality ingredients.

  • Since we are growing our organic leafy greens locally here in the Midwest, Superior Fresh salad blends taste fresher and last longer in the fridge as compared to the majority of field-grown lettuce that is traveling from California and Arizona to supermarkets nationwide.

  • Try all of our salad varieties and discover your favorites - from our Citrus Splash to Midwest Medley, our family farm grows greens in a sustainable manner that taste great in salads, on sandwiches and as part of any meal. Discover them all!

Wishing you good health & happiness in the new year!
